Welcome to the summer edition of Accelerating News, covering ongoing R&D developments that pave the way for future large-scale projects as well as for new applications that could improve our daily lives. Some of these developments were reported during IPAC18, and you can read a nice summary by the conference chairpersons. Last month, saw the ground-breaking ceremony of the HL-LHC project; a major milestone for CERN and for the global physics community. Congratulations to our colleagues, from all over the world, who collaborated to hit this milestone.
The new issue reflects the wealth of scientific and technical fields linked to accelerator technology and the importance of continuing with a robust R&D programme to prepare the next generation of particle accelerators. You can read the latest updates from the 11T dipole prototype magnet for HL-LHC and the promising FRESCA2 results towards the 16T magnets for FCC. Moreover, we report on the successful tests of the HL-LHC crab cavities as well as the first prototypes of RF cavities for future circular colliders.
Developments in particle accelerators can also have a big impact on our daily lives. In our summer issue you will find the latest updates from ARIES; building on the success of EUCARD and EUCARD-2 the new projects aims to foster collaboration between academia, research institutes and industry to develop more efficient and powerful accelerators that will benefit both science and society. You can also read more about the commissioning of a novel compact aviation cargo scanning linear accelerator at STFC Daresbury Laboratory and the simulations of high-charge electron beams in laser wakefield accelerators that could allow ultra-fast studies of condensed matter and medical imaging.
Finally, you can read an interview with Anders Unnervik (Head of CERN’s Procurement and Industrial Services) about BSBF2018 and the role of procurement practices in the development of large-scale research infrastructures.
